“Save Oji-River Initiative” protests bad governance in Oji-River Local Government Enugu State

Save Oji-River Initiative, on Sunday, protested against what it described as backwardness and dilapidated infrastructure in the Oji-River Local Government Area of Enugu State.

The protesters, who carried placards with various inscriptions such as, ‘We condemn the imposition of leaders in Oji-River’ and ‘Join us and make Oji-River great again’, among others, marched through major streets of Oji town.

Members of the group were drawn from all the seven communities – Oji, Ugwuoba, Egwu-Achi, Achi, Nyi, Olo, Akpugoeze, which make up the local government.

They expressed regrets that despite the fact that the council was currently receiving allocations directly from the Federal Government, it remained the only local government in the state without basic infrastructures, such as a functional health facility.

Addressing journalists shortly after the protest, the Convener of SORI, Mr. Kingsley Okah, described the group as a citizens’ organized advocacy interested in holding public office holders accountable and push them to be transparent and provide good governance to the people.

Okah described as most unfortunate that out of the 17 local government areas of Enugu State, “Oji-River is the only one without a general hospital, and the only leprosy center in the area is unconscious as snakes pursue patients out of the wards.
